2. Animator's Survival Kit - 3 Ways to Animate
1. Straight Ahead
- drawing one movement to the other without future planning, basically going with the flow.
Pros:
- natural flow of action, vitality of improvisation
- ability to get creative
- unconscious mind starts to kick in
- fun
Cons:
- things wander
- time stretches and shots get longer
- characters grow and shrink, hard to clean up, expensive
- tend to miss the point of the shot and not arrive at right timing
2. Pose to Pose
Process goes from: Key drawings > Extremes > Breakdowns/passing positions and in-betweens
Pros:
- clarity, point of scene is nice and clear
- structured, calculated, logical
- nice drawings and positions,
- actions happen at correct timing
Cons:
- we miss the flow
- actions are choppy and unnatural
- no magic, too literal and cold-blooded
3. Combination of Straight Ahead and Pose to Pose
Doing a bit of both but using pose to pose as guides and improvising freely as we go along.
We can do straight aheads between keys.
Do each run process on different major body part.
Process:
1. most important thing
2. secondary thing
3. third thing
4. fourth thing, etc
5. then, any flapping bits, drapery, hair, fat, breasts, tails etc
